WHAT IS ACNE SCARRING?

Acne scars are changes in texture on the skin. They can occur in different forms including pin point scar, indentations and inflamed scars and are caused by acne.

CAUSES OF ACNE SCARRING

Acne occurs when your skin over produces oil and dead skin cells get trapped in your skins pores which manifests in an outbreak of pimples, whiteheads, or blackheads and can become infected. Active acne can show up anywhere on the body but commonly presents on the face, back, shoulders and chest.

Acne scarring happens when the swollen pore causes the follicle wall to break and form a lesion. Shallow lesions may go away on their own, but deeper lesions can cause the skin to try and repair itself by producing new collagen fibres.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACNE SCARS?

There are several types of acne scars. Below, you will find an overview of the different types of acne scars and their appearance. Depending on the type of acne scar, a different skincare or scar treatment may be required.

Boxcar scars: The box car acne scar is usually a depressed scar type that ranges from superficial to medium in depth. It also has clearly defined edging on the top layer of the skin.

Ice pick scars: Ice pick scars tend to be deeper scars and quite narrow. Contrary to the previous scar type, it goes all the way into the lower layers of the skin. This makes them more difficult to remove or reduce.

Rolling scars and atrophic scars: Rolling and atrophic acne scars fall under the same category as they look similar. These scars can either appear as indentations on the skin, but also as undulations. In some cases, rolling and anthropic scars can get in the deeper layers of the skin, making them more problematic.

Hypertrophic scarring: These types of acne scars look lumpy and can appear on specific areas such as the jawline, neck, chest, and even the back.

Red scars: These acne scars can appear on the cheeks and the forehead. They usually look very red and are often associated with the signs of early acne scarring. In some cases, these red scars can fade without needing further treatment.

Keloid scars: Keloids are raised scars that can be pink, red, skin-coloured or darker than your natural skin tone. They can form as a result of minor skin damage caused by acne and commonly affect darker skin tones more than lighter tones.

ARE ACNE SCARS PERMANENT?

Most scars, except for the previously mentioned red scars, are usually permanent. However, they can be treated and improved by tackling various layers of the skin. Treatments for acne scars can be subject to skin type and scar severity. Common examples include peels, laser treatment, and skin resurfacing.

CAN YOU REMOVE ACNE SCARS WITHOUT SURGERY?

There are many non-surgical treatments for acne scarring. Treating acne scars often require these non-surgical treatments. It can involve the use of products with retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid or alpha hydroxy acids. In addition to that, it can also involve specialist treatments which will be elaborated upon next.

WHAT NON-SURGICAL ACNE SCAR REMOVAL TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE?

As mentioned previously, there are a number of scar treatments that can be implemented. These include the Venus Viva, Dermapen, chemical peels, and the Harmony.

Dermapen (Skin Needling)

The Dermapen is a microneedling device that is commonly used by dermatologists and beauty clinics. Much like other treatments mentioned in this overview, it has a wide range of applications.

How Does Dermapen Acne Scar Removal Work?

Dermapen treatment will puncture the skin with microneedles. By creating these tiny punctures, bulky scar tissue is reduced and the body’s healing response is triggered. In turn, more collagen is produced to repair and heal the skin.

Benefits And Side-Effects

The Dermapen provides a great deal of benefits, ranging from skin tightening to improving hyperpigmentation and acne scarring. Patients who have a treatment with the Dermapen can cause some minor skin irritation post-treatment. There can also be a little redness for a couple of days. However, no downtime is needed post procedure.

Peels

Much like the other treatments in this overview, chemical peels are used for a variety of skin irregularities and abnormalities. It can be used to treat wrinkles, acne scarring and even skin discolouration.

How Do Skin Peels Work To Remove Acne Scars?

Chemical peels work with a special solution that quickly removes the outer layer of the skin. With the dead skin gone, the body responds by creating new skin cells to replace those that were removed. In turn, this results in clearer, brighter skin with reduced abnormalities and acne scarring.

Benefits And Side-Effects

A chemical peel can provide numerous benefits as a treatment. It stimulates the production of collagen and promotes the growth of new skin cells. In addition to that, it can also reduce any existing breakouts. It is also amazingly effective as an anti-ageing treatment. Patients can experience side-effects after a chemical peel. These side-effects are similar to the side-effects experienced from other treatments for acne scarring, this includes minor redness and discomfort.

Accent Prime Pixel Skin Resurfacing

The Accent Prime is an effective treatment that combines RF (radio-frequency) and Collegen Induction Therapy technologies to help reduce the appearance of acne scarring.

Accent Prime is Alma Lasers’ most advanced workstation for skin tightening, body contouring and skin resurfacing. Pixel RF ablates and heats the skin with microplasma technology that uses fractional radio-frequency energy to create tiny channel wounds in the dermis. The skin quickly sets in motion its natural healing processes to promote new collagen production and elastin growth in the deeper layers. Skin resurfacing is used to improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles, ageing or sun damaged skin, uneven texture, enlarged pores, scarring and stretchmarks.

REDUCING THE SIZE AND APPEARANCE OF YOUR SCARS

There are a few things you can do to help reduce the size of your acne scars and prevent them from becoming worse. Try to treat your acne as soon as you notice an outbreak to minimise the chance of scarring. Use topical creams to reduce the inflammation that can lead to deeper acne scars. Don’t pick at your acne as this can worsen the swelling and leave the scars to heal naturally. When outside, remember to wear a good sunscreen to prevent the sun from darkening your acne scars.

To help reduce acne outbreaks, you should develop an effective skin care routine and use the right skin care products with active ingredients to help keep acne under control. This can include salicylic acid which removes the dead skin cells from the top layer of skin and decreases swelling and retinoids that can unclog pores.
